May Krabi Weather

What is May Weather Like in Krabi?

May is here and I wanted to update KrabiNature to let you know what it is usually like. I’ll do June in a few minutes as well, check out June here >

This month we had a couple of very rainy days, even having rain for 24 hours straight one time. This is kind of rare for the month of May in Krabi, but it happens.

We had 6 days of rain so far (it is the 28th May now). 4 Days of rain were heavy – lasting a few hours at a time. It hit most of Krabi Town and Ao Nang. The other 2 days were not bad and were just regular 1 hour showers passing through quickly at the end of the day.

Of course Krabi weather depends on many factors. We know you’re planning your trip to Krabi and want to know what the weather could be like in that time period. We’ll tell you more about it below.

Typical Rain in Krabi in May?

This year we had a dry season that lasted about 60 days. No rain in that long. Sometimes it lasts longer. We got very little rain in April this year, when usually we get some violent storms that last a couple-few days.

The rain has slowed down here for the past week. It has been very hot – 33+C so the rain will be back soon.

The problem with the rain in April and May is that there are some very violent storms including lightning and strong winds. The lightning during some of our May storms this year was striking every 10 seconds. We were caught under a hut by someone’s house and it was terrifying.

The good thing is, lightning storms only last an hour or so before blowing away and over some other area.

Our weather is not from any particular direction during May. Meaning, wherever the high pressure system and low pressure system is, that will dictate where the rain and storms go.

May begins the cloudy afternoons after Noon and cools things off some days. We love those days. We really love those nights when we can sleep without the air conditioning.

May through July Skies

From May through July – the sky is dark with thick clouds for a portion of most days. This cools things off. It doesn’t always rain, but usually we get 30 mins to an hour of rain each day as we get closer to July. August through October and even December can be very wet and raining a lot.

In the months of May to September is the ideal time-period to take a hike in Krabi up Ngon Nak mountain to see the views over Ao NangRailay, and Phi Phi Islands.

The lightning storms mostly go away after May and there is only hard rain without direct lightning strikes. We often have lightning in the sky that looks like it’s connecting up there, but it doesn’t come down.

Temperature in Krabi in May?

In the morning it is cooler – around 25°C ( F) and that lasts until the sun gets cranking. Even then, the temperature during May is not as hot as March and April. On average the temperature during the day must be around 30-32°C ( F) and it’s not too crazy hot.

The sun is strong during this time, we’re near the equator so sunblock is advised or you’ll get a nasty burn.

The humidity stays high through November and sometimes later. The dry air comes from China and sometimes only comes for a very short Jan-February.

High season starts around November and goes to May, but over the last few years pre-Covid we were receiving many visitors in May through October as well. There are always less than during high season though. If crowds are something you’d like to avoid, come during those months instead.

Mosquitos in Krabi in May?

Yes, we start to have an increase of mosquitos as the rain starts coming regularly. There are lots of cases of Dengue, Chikungunya, and other mosquito-born viruses. As long as it isn’t raining all the time, the mosquitos chill out and give us a short break during the months around May, but usually there are too many mozzies. Lately we are seeing more mosquitos the last couple of weeks because the rain has increased.

To be honest, the weather in Krabi town and beaches, indeed all over the province in December is always a bit of a mystery until it happens.

What is a Usual May Like?

USUALLY in May we have hot sunny mornings with clouds coming after Noon. Sometimes the clouds bring rain by 3-4 pm. Other times (most times) not.

SOMETIMES we have a few days of heavy rain that string together. During that time there will be little sun, but it will be nice and cool. Krabi doesn’t flood much, so no worries here. We have only had about 5 light floods in the 17 years we’ve been here.

Should You Visit Krabi in May?

If you are planning a trip to Krabi Thailand for May, this is a fantastic time to come. There are very few tourists – about 1/10th what we had in March/April. This will last for a few months, so get over here during this time if possible.

You may have some rainy days, but you will almost surely be able to get out and do some adventures – hiking, beaches, caveswaterfallhot spring, or whatever you want to do.
