The River’s Geography and Character

The Krabi River stretches about 35 kilometers from its inland starting point to where it meets the Andaman Sea. The river has many little tributaries and mangrove-lined channels creating a complex network of waterways perfect for exploration. The main channel varies in width from 50 to 200 meters, making it accessible for kayakers of all skill levels while providing enough space for comfortable paddling.

Best Times to Kayak

Time of Day

The optimal time for kayaking the Krabi River is early morning, between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM. During these hours, you’ll enjoy cooler temperatures, calmer waters, and the best opportunities for wildlife viewing. The afternoon sun can be intense, though sunset paddles (4:00 PM to 6:00 PM) offer some really spectacular photo opps as the sky transforms into a canvas of orange and pink hues most nights of the year.

Seasonal Considerations

The best months for kayaking in Krabi are November through April during the dry season. You’ll enjoy stable weather conditions, clearer waters, and reduced chance of rainfall. The monsoon season (May to October) can still offer kayaking opportunities, but visitors should check weather forecasts and tide tables carefully. Don’t get caught out on the water in a lightning storm, that’s no fun!

Khao Khanab Nam Cave

This awesome little landmark in Krabi Town on the Krabi River is most often visited by people staying at a hotel or resort in town who want something quick to do. You can take a longtail boat up the river from the Mud Crab Statues and it costs 300-400 Thai baht for the round-trip up the river – about 1.25 km (4,080 ft).

You exit the boat at the small pier and trek over to the steps and climb up into the Khao Khanam Nam (he flanks the water) cave. The cave is cool because it has an opening in the top open to the sky. It makes for some great photos.

This is an easy 90 minute trip there and back to town where you can continue shopping, eating, or planning the rest of your trip out to see the islands or some other Krabi thing to do.

The caves on the river are rather famous and many people used to make the trek by longtail boat. The place is called Khao Khanab Nam.

The Krabi River ecosystem supports an incredible diversity of wildlife. We have Bird Tours by Boat that people absolutely love. Or, you can just cruise along in your yak and see what you can find.

Birds

  • White-bellied sea eagles and other Krabi Raptors soaring overhead or diving for fish!
  • Kingfishers darting along the water’s surface or perched on a mangrove tree branch scanning the water for fish.
  • Hornbills perched in the tree canopy.
  • Not too hard to find Egrets and herons stalking through the mud and shallows
  • Mangrove Pittas calling loudly from the thick trees

Monkeys – Macaques

Monkeys can often be seen in the mangrove trees along the Krabi River. Please don’t feed them or interact with them, they are known for stealing valuables and food and are generally a menace. They carry ticks and could have rabies. A bite from these monkeys is not such a rare occurrence. Ignore them and move quickly past them. Yes, they SWIM too.

Marine Life & Reptiles

  • Mangrove Pit Vipers (Do a Mangrove Pit Viper Tour to find them.)
  • Reticulated Pythons – they love the water and can often be seen swimming around for a meal.
  • Monitor lizards basking on riverbanks or swimming around to find something to eat
  • Mudskippers in the mud and skipping across exposed roots
  • Archer fish shooting water at insects
  • Various crab species scuttling along mangrove roots
  • Occasional dolphin sightings near the river mouth

Mangrove Forest Ecosystem

The river’s extensive mangrove forests serve as natural filters and protective nurseries for marine life. These remarkable trees, with their intricate root systems, create a unique ecosystem that kayakers can explore through narrow channels and tunnels. The mangroves also protect the coastline from erosion and storm damage, making them crucial to the region’s environmental health.

Eat at the Floating Restaurants!

Koh Klang Floating Restaurant is a great place to stop for lunch if you have some time and want to do something only a tiny fraction of tourists get to do during their visit. Ask any boat guy on the Krabi River and he will either take you or know who can do it for you. Prices are reasonable and it’s a unique and very novel experience you won’t regret.
