Lizards & Geckos

We have large water monitors and other monitor lizards that can grow to 2 meters long (78+ inches!). We have gliding lizards in the Draco genus that fly from tree to tree in the daylight hours. We have gliding geckos (Kuhl’s geckos) that glide between trees too at night time.

We have Forest Crested Lizards and some other lizards in the Acanthosaura genus that have amazing patterns and horns on their bodies. We can find them during day and night.

There are skinks of all kinds running round on the roads and in the leaves. They are easy to see in daylight at any park or country road alongside the rainforest.

Slow Lorises

Slow lorises are small, nocturnal primates found in Krabi and other areas of Southeast Asia. They have large, round eyes and slow movements. Their soft, thick fur ranges in color from gray to reddish-brown, often with a dark stripe running down their back. These animals have an excellent grip, allowing them to cling to branches for long periods without effort.

Their large eyes help them see in the dark, making them expert hunters of insects, small animals, and tree sap.

We can see them at night when their eyes reflect the light from a flashlight or headlamp. They are like small and slow-moving monkeys. Super cute! Many people like to target them during a Night Safari.

National parks are one place you can find them by scanning the trees at night.

Civets

Also in the trees at night are civets. These are small but long cat-like mammals with pointed faces, and bushy tails, resembling a mix between a cat and a mongoose. These elusive creatures are primarily found in forests, plantations, and even urban areas, where they hunt for food at night.

Their diet is omnivorous, consisting of fruits, small animals, insects, and even coffee cherries, which contribute to the production of the famous and expensive civet coffee (Kopi Luwak). Though they play an important role in seed dispersal and maintaining ecological balance, civets often come into conflict with farmers due to their tendency to raid crops and chicken houses.

Find them at national parks at night or go with us on a Night Safari.

Colugos

Colugos are tree-dwelling mammals found in Krabi and other areas of Southeast Asia which can glid between trees. They use a large membrane of skin called the patagium, which stretches from their neck to the tips of their fingers, toes, and even their tail.

This allows them to glide up to 150 meters in a single leap, helping them escape predators and move efficiently through the forest canopy. Colugos have large, forward-facing eyes for excellent night vision, soft fur in shades of gray or brown for camouflage, and sharp claws to grip tree bark as they climb.

These unique mammals are strictly arboreal, rarely coming down to the ground, where they are slow and vulnerable. They feed primarily on leaves, flowers, and young shoots, relying on their long intestines and specialized stomachs to break down tough plant material. Their nocturnal lifestyle helps them avoid predators like eagles, snakes, and large cats.

Snakes!

Krabi has many snakes you can go looking for during the daytime and night. During the day, you are on your own as it’s too hot for us to do any kind of field trip taking others along.

Snakes can be found in many different places during day and night hours. Please be VERY CAUTIOUS, there are some snakes in Krabi that are capable of deadly bites.

At night we have Night Safaris where we can go look for snakes like:

Night Safaris are quite safe, we’ve never had anyone injured. We take a lot of precautions!

Insects and Invertebrates

Insects have 6 legs. Invertebrates include centipedes, spiders, millipedes, and others.

Walking around any rainforest at night, especially when it is damp, but really anytime, can produce a range of different insects and invertebrates (no spinal column).

Some of our favorites to find on Night Tours are:

  • Tarantulas – 3 species
  • Wolf Spiders
  • Huntsman Spiders
  • Centipedes
  • Forest Scorpions
  • Stick Insects
  • Preying Mantis
