Krabi Night Safari Trip Report 12 March

We went out the other night with some people from the USA and Poland. We found a lot of wildlife once everyone got adjusted to the light and how to use their headlamps.

Last night was extra special because we found some things we’d never seen before and that’s always exciting. To be honest, we usually find at least 1 new thing we’ve never seen before on each and every Night Safari!

Usually the new animal or creature we find is an insect or other bug, but we sometimes see a new spider, gecko, bird, or bat too.

Ogre spider in Krabi, Thailand.

Geckos

  • Cyrtodactylus pulchellus and peguensis – visual on 3 different ones
  • Tokay Geckos – heard 2 different tokays in the forest.

Lizards

  • The Calotes emma species were found five different times.

Frogs & Toads

  • A reddish shade tree frog was found at the base of a small tree.
  • An orange pointy-headed frog was found hopping around in the leaf littler.
  • Bufo toads – 3 hopping around the leaf litter.

Scorpions

  • A big Forest Scorpion was found and looked at with the UV (Black) light.
  • Some smaller scorpions were found outside of holes and on some leaves. They were fast moving!

Spiders

  • Small golden orb weaver.
  • Ogre spider! The one that throws the web on the prey to catch it. Like a real spider-man spider.
  • Large Golden Fringe Tarantula.
  • 5 Tarantulas – unspecified species found. 3 in new places.

Bats

  • Numerous bats flew overhead, we couldn’t tell species.

Birds

  • Indian Night Jars (2) overhead and on the forest floor.

Insects

  • Cockroaches
  • Termites
  • Ant highways
  • Crickets
  • Butterflies
  • Beetles

Owls

  • Heard 3 different owls, one of them within 30 meters of us. Couldn’t find it in the trees!
